Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Eco-labelling Scheme.

Ivan Yates

Question:

258 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals he has to introduce a product labelling system whereby the proportion of recyclability of products is declared on the packaging by manufacturers. [24898/00]

Under the recently revised EU eco-labelling scheme, it is open to manufacturers, retailers and distributors to apply for eco-labels for certain categories of products. Products which receive the label have been independently certified as being environmentally superior over their entire life cycle, from the sourcing of material through manufacture and disposal. The National Standards Authority of Ireland is the competent body for eco-labelling in Ireland and decides on applications for the award of the label.

Question No. 259 taken with Question No. 159.
