Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Ivan Yates

Question:

166 Mr. Yates asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the way in which it is proposed that sectoral voluntary agreements would be operated in relation to greenhouse gases and limits being imposed on certain businesses in relation to our international commitments under the Kyoto protocol. [24908/00]

The national climate change strategy was published last week and is being examined in detail by my Department. Among the measures proposed to achieve a reduction in the level of greenhouse gas emissions from industry are a range of voluntary agreements with key sectors. The strategy envisages that the first of these agreements will be in place within two years and that all agreements will be in place by 2005. My Department will be undertaking detailed consultations with relevant industry bodies and other agencies, to ensure successful achievement of these agreements.
