Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nursing Student Transfers.

John Perry

Question:

251 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will intervene on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo and have her transferred to the school of nursing in view of the circumstances (details supplied); if he will make a favourable decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25468/00]

I have no function in the transfer of nursing students between schools of nursing. Such a transfer may only be arranged by agreement between the directors of nursing of the two schools of nursing concerned and the authorities of the two associated third level institutions.

In any event, I understand from the North Western Health Board that there are no vacancies at the School of General Nursing, Sligo General Hospital, which had a record intake of 40 nursing students this year. Earlier this year, the North Western Health Board ran a very successful campaign aimed at promoting nursing as a career. This resulted in all of the available training places in general and psychiatric nursing in the region being filled.
