Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Nora Owen

Question:

311 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the cost of providing housing rent assistance in each health board area; and the number of people in receipt of this assistance in each health board area. [25547/00]

Statistics on the amount of rent supplement paid and the number of recipients in each health board are presented in the following tabular statement. Details are provided for 1999 and to date in 2000.

Total expenditure on rent supplements was approximately £100.6 million in 1999 and it is expected that expenditure will increase to approximately £118.4 million in 2000. The number of recipients has increased from 41,873 at the end of 1999 to 42,478 at 27 October 2000.

Expenditure on rent supplements has increased substantially over the past ten years. In recent years, this has mainly been due to increases in rent levels rather than recipient numbers.
