Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Question:

354 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will have investigations made into an alleged serious crime perpetrated on a person (details supplied); if a Garda investigation is ongoing in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25523/00]

On the morning of 2 August 2000, a 19 year old prisoner claimed he had been sexually assaulted by two other prisoners in the toilets on C wing in Mountjoy Prison. The prisoner concerned was referred for appropriate medical attention and the Garda were immediately notified.

The governor and the Garda have commenced investigations into the incident and their investigations are ongoing. It would be inappropriate for me to comment in greater detail at this stage.
However, I can assure the Deputy that the person referred to has access to appropriate medical, psychiatric and psychological services and all reasonable steps are being taken to ensure his safety.
