Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Traffic Wardens.

Question:

361 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give the details of the allocation of traffic wardens for each Garda district; the special provisions under which they operate under in residential areas where parking is severely restricted. [25795/00]

In the first instance, I should state that in the Dublin metropolitan region traffic wardens are employed by the Garda Commissioner and not by my Department. The day-to-day deployment of traffic wardens in this region is, therefore, a matter for the Garda Commissioner. I am informed that traffic wardens are assigned on a divisional basis and as of now are based at the following stations:

Garda Station

(Including both full-time and part-time wardens)
I understand that traffic wardens are empowered under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, as amended, to issue fines on the spot for parking offences and no tax displayed offences on stationary vehicles. I am further informed that no special provisions apply to the manner in which they perform their duties in residential areas.
I should point out that in addition to the traffic wardens mentioned above, some local authorities may also employ traffic wardens or other traffic enforcement personnel.
