Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

136 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the existence of the historic Viking fort of Dunrally at the River Barrow in Vicarstown, Portlaoise, County Laois; if inspectors from her Department or Dúchas have examined the fort; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25395/00]

Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss de Valera)

My Department is aware of the existence of Dunrally Fort and archaeologists from Dúchas have inspected the site. However, its true nature and extent cannot be fully ascertained without further investigation. In this regard, I have asked for a topographic and geophysical survey of the site to be commissioned and this is being undertaken at present.

The fort, which is in private ownership, is included in the record of monuments and places for County Laois, thus affording it legal protection under the National Monuments Acts. While I have no plans to take the site into my care at this time, the results of the topographical and geophysical survey will assist in forming future strategies to ensure its continued protection.
