Vol. 526 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Willie Penrose

Question:

223 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Finance the steps that are being taken to alleviate flooding problems at specific locations on the River Brosna, Mullingar, County Westmeath; the plans he has to carry out works under culverts and so on, on this river; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26288/00]

The River Brosna forms part of the River Brosna catchment drainage scheme.

Under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, the Commissioners of Public Works are obliged to maintain the works in proper repair and effective condition.

The channel through Mullingar is maintained on a regular basis. This involves regular inspection, maintenance of weed traps, channels and bridges. In the last two years all parts of the river in Mullingar have been maintained at least once, with many parts maintained more frequently.

Austin Currie

Question:

224 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Finance the steps taken to prevent flooding at Lucan, County Dublin following the bursting of its banks by the River Griffeen in 1993; and the measures now proposed following the worst ever recent flooding. [26395/00]

The Commissioners of Public Works have not carried out any drainage scheme on the River Griffeen and consequently have no responsibility for maintenance of the river. The Office of Public Works will, however, provide whatever support is requested by the local authority in carrying out its responsibilities to relieve flooding.
