Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry.

Ivan Yates

Question:

208 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the income crisis in the fishing industry and in particular the shell fishermen's association of the south-east whereby, due to fuel costs and bad storms, their earnings have been greatly reduced; if he has any proposals for an aid package to alleviate their plight; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27056/00]

As I have previously indicated to the House, I am keenly aware that Irish fishermen all around the coast are experiencing considerable difficulties as a result of increased fuel costs in particular. The fishing industry is exceptionally exposed to increased fuel prices because of the relatively high proportion of fuel costs to overall costs. The industry, in common with other fishing industries in other member states is rebated excise and VAT on marine diesel. As a result fuel cost increases directly reflect movements in the supply price. Fuel costs to the fishing sector have doubled since January 1999.

I have a very clear understanding of the scale and severity of the industry's problems. I am continuing discussions with the industry and with my colleagues in Government on ways to tackle the difficulties. Options to alleviate the situation including the fishing industry's proposals are being urgently assessed having regard to overall Government strategies and approaches to the fuel issue.

Questions Nos. 209, 210 and 211 taken with Question No. 200.
