Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Reliefs.

John Browne

Question:

244 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans to make university registration fees tax deductible; and if he has any further plans to introduce a system of low or no interest Government loans for students attending third level colleges. [26833/00]

As the Deputy will be aware there are a number of tax reliefs for fees paid for third level education. Regarding registrations charges, I understand that these charges cover registration, examinations and student services, medical, careers services, etc. They are not covered by the free fees initiative which the tax reliefs follow. Therefore, tax relief is not available for registration costs.

The question of low or no interest Government loans for students attending third level colleges would be a matter in the first instance for my colleague, the Minister for Education and Science, Deputy Woods.
