Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fuel Taxes.

Ivan Yates

Question:

256 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if he has any proposals to reduce the level of taxation on fuel for fishermen in view of the harsh effects that oil price increases have had on the incomes of the fishing sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27058/00]

I wish to inform the Deputy that under the terms of article 8.1 of Council Directive 92/81, mineral oil supplied for use as fuel for the purposes of navigation within community waters, other than in private pleasure craft, including fishing, is exempt from excise duty.

VAT on fuel for use in fishing vessels is refundable under Value-Added Tax (Refund of Tax) (No 16) Order, 1983.
