Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Financial Services Regulation.

Brendan McGahon

Question:

82 Mr. McGahon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the current status of the introduction of a single financial regulator; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26648/00]

Liz McManus

Question:

164 Ms McManus asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when she expects the preparation of legislation to provide for a single financial regulator to reach finality, having regard to the long period of time in which a decision has been outstanding; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26570/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 82 and 164 together.

Discussions have taken place between officials of my Department and of the Department of Finance and the matter is now being considered by myself and the Minister for Finance. When the outstanding issues have been settled, the Minister for Finance and I will bring proposals to Government for consideration and decision. Following the Government's decision, I would expect that any legislation required for the establishment of the authority would be promoted by the Minister for Finance.
