Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Skill Shortages.

Richard Bruton

Question:

171 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the actions she has taken to date to implement the recommendations of the second report on the expert group on future skills needs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26681/00]

The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, EGFSN, in its second report, made a range of recommendations impacting on the education and enterprise sectors. The group will publish an annual report in spring of next year which will set out the progress made on implementing the detailed recommendations of the second report.

In respect of those recommendations directed towards my Department and its agencies, the overall position is as follows: In the case of low skilled and labour intensive sectors, my Department is working with FÁS to clarify and develop its role in the area of in company training in the services sector and the EGFSN recommendations in relation to the contract cleaning sector are being pursued in that context. In regard to the retail sector, FÁS has introduced a traineeship for the sector as recommended. In the clothing sector, both Enterprise Ireland and Skillnets are working with the sector to improve its skills levels. In addition, the task force on lifelong learning is assessing the measures necessary to further promote workplace learning and upskilling.

In relation to apprenticeships, a range of initiatives have been taken and I have detailed these in response to recent questions from Deputy Naughten and others. In relation to measures to promote job opportunities, the FÁS Jobs Ireland campaign has been put in place and is being continued.
