Question:

181 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of applications from Chinese nationals for work permits currently being processed in her Department; the average processing time of such applications; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26439/00]

The total number of work permits issued to employers to allow them to employ Chinese nationals in the State for the year to 20 November 2000 was 321 and the number refused was 50. At present the average waiting time for dealing with applications from employers in general is about four weeks.
