Vol. 526 No. 6

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

John McGuinness

Question:

241 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Carlow who has been refused a medical card and is now suffering a great deal of hardship due to this decision; and if, in view of her personal circumstances and poor financial situation he will reverse the decision immediately. [27202/00]

The determination of eligibility for medical cards is the responsibility of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board. I, as Minister for Health and Children, do not have a function in the issue of medical cards to individuals. However, as the determination of eligibility of the person concerned rests with the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board, I have asked him to have the matter investigated and to reply directly to the Deputy.
