Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

160 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the current minimum age at which young calves can be exported to other countries for veal production; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28515/00]

The minimum age is not specified in the EU Council Directive 91/628 which was transposed into Irish law by S.I. No 98 of 1995, but the legislation requires that all new born animals in which the navel has not com pletely healed, shall not be considered fit for transportation.

All animals being exported are veterinary inspected prior to loading and only those fit for the journey are allowed to be loaded.
