Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sugar Beet Quota.

Michael Creed

Question:

173 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if a person (details supplied) in County Cork who has applied for a sugar beet quota is entitled to a quota; the criteria used in the allocation of this additional quota; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28605/00]

A restructuring scheme for the allocation of sugar beet contracts has been agreed between Irish Sugar plc and the IFA. It is hoped this scheme will provide some unused contract tonnage, surrendered by farmers ceasing beet production, for existing growers to expand production and for new growers and young farmers to enter the sector. Allocation of quotas is a matter for the company.
