Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Industrial Action.

Nora Owen

Question:

373 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the allowances he has made for the students who will be sitting the leaving certificate examination in June 2001 and who are at present unable to attend school due to the teachers' work to rule; if he has made arrangements for students to repeat their sixth year and relevant schools to be entitled to capitation grants for repeat students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28294/00]

The present industrial dispute involving the ASTI is being kept under review. Grades awarded in the leaving certificate examination are based on marking schemes which are finalised at marking conferences just before the marking of papers in June-July each year.

Capitation grants are paid to secondary schools in respect of pupils who qualify to repeat a year at post-primary level as recognised pupils in accordance with the rules and programme for secondary schools.
