Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

47 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the extent to which animal feed compounds are imported at present; if animal feed compounds are exported; the controls applicable in this regard; if he has satisfied himself that the highest quality standards apply; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28465/00]

There is insignificant trade in animal feed compounds, other than Northern Ireland. A harmonised EU system for the manufacture and sale of animal feed compounds applies throughout the community and this legislation is enforced here by means of ongoing inspections by inspectors of my Department who monitor feed at mills, ports and retail premises. All animal feed compounds, including those imported, are sampled and analysed on a regular basis to ensure compliance with the regulations. As part of a general review of food safety, the EU Commission is currently considering new controls in regard to animal feeding stuffs.
