Austin Currie

Question:

188 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will confirm that a special needs teacher has been sanctioned for a school (details supplied) in County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28876/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 187 and 188 together.

My Department has recently sanctioned a resource teacher post for the school in question. The school authorities have been informed of this development.

The child mentioned by the Deputy was among those considered for resource teaching support when consideration was being given to the allocation of the above post. I understand that this pupil did not meet the criteria for resource teaching support set down in my Department's circular 8/99.
However, I have requested my Department's inspectorate to review the case of the child in question. When this review is completed my Department will be in touch with the school authorities and the child's parents.
