Question:

144 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make funding available to the South Eastern Health Board for the appointment of a second oncologist and an oncology unit at Waterford Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29001/00]

The provision of services in this instance is the responsibility of the South Eastern Health Board. Approval to the filling of a replacement consultant oncologist post was conveyed to the South Eastern Health Board on 21 September 2000. An additional medical oncologist post was also approved on 20 November 2000.

Dedicated funding provided to the South Eastern Health Board since 1997 to implement the national cancer strategy is outlined below: 1997 – £115,000; 1998 – £665,000; 1999 – £509,000; and 2000 – £1,100,000.
