Vol. 527 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

John McGuinness

Question:

158 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of guides employed by Kilkenny Castle; the content of the advertisements and the internal notice issued to recruit guides recently; if ample notice was given to indicate that two guides, not one, were being recruited; if the interview process sought to fill one vacancy or two; if a panel was created from the interview process; if all applicants and in house personnel were aware of this; and if a vacancy currently exists. [28847/00]

At present there are five permanent guides and one seasonal guide employed at Kilkenny Castle.

On 20 July 2000, a notice circulated to all Dúchas sites indicated that there were currently vacancies for permanent guides at Kilkenny Castle, Dún Aonghusa, Kilmainham Gaol, three positions, and Wicklow Mountains National Park, and inviting applications by 4 August. This notice was displayed in two areas within Kilkenny Castle, and the supervisor guide drew the attention of staff to it.

The number of vacancies to be filled was specified only in the case of Kilmainham Gaol. At the time of advertisement only one vacancy had arisen in Kilkenny Castle. However, it is normal practice within Dúchas to use interviews not only to fill existing vacancies, but also to establish a panel from which vacancies occurring within a specified future period will be filled. To ensure there is no confusion in the future, I have instructed that such notices should in future indicate specifically whether a panel will be formed.

Subsequent to the relevant interviews, an additional vacancy arose at Kilkenny Castle, and this position was filled from the panel in line with normal procedure. Currently no vacancy exists at this location.

A copy of the advertisement/notice will be forwarded to the Deputy.
