Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

207 Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí deployed in special detective units; and the amount of funding allocated to the special detective units, including pay. [29110/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as of 5 December 2000, there was a total of 355 gardaí, all ranks, attached to the special detective unit. It is not possible within the time available to give accurate figures for the pay costs.

The non-pay costs associated with the special detective unit range over several subheads in the Garda Vote and the research involved in providing the necessary information would involve the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time.

Question:

208 Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí deployed in the Criminal Assets Bureau; and the proportion of the Garda budget allocated to the Criminal Assets Bureau. [29111/00]

The number of gardaí deployed in the Criminal Assets Bureau is as follows: one detective chief superintendent; one detective superintendent; two detective inspectors; four detective sergeants and 15 detective gardaí.

The bureau has its own separate budget of which a total of £2,152,128 was spent in 1999.
