Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Duties.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

210 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of Garda working hours and personnel divested to traffic duties; and the estimated annual cost in this regard. [29113/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are 598 members of the Garda Síochána, all ranks, employed full-time on traffic duties throughout the State as at 1 December 2000.

I should state, however, that all members of the Garda Síochána have a responsibility, inter alia, to deal with traffic matters as they arise, and, therefore, it is not possible to calculate the number of hours taken up by these duties, or the total cost involved.
