John McGuinness

Question:

235 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress with regard to an application from CBS secondary school, James Street, Kilkenny for the provision of a gym; and the date on which site works will commence. [29080/00]

It has been agreed in principle to provide a PE hall of 806mf7>2 for CBS secondary school, James Street, Kilkenny.

The planning and building unit of my Depart ment is currently preparing a PE hall template. This template will standardise the construction of PE halls at second level schools and will reduce the architectural planning processes considerably.
It is anticipated that the template, which is being piloted initially in four schools, will be available in the first half of next year. Thereafter, the template will be used to plan the provision of PE halls nationally.

Question:

236 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made on the provision of a new gym at Loreto secondary school, Granges Road, Kilkenny; the expected date on which the project will commence; and the cost involved. [29081/00]

My Department has granted approval for the provision of a stand alone PE hall of 806mf7>2 for Loreto secondary school, Granges Road, Kilkenny.

The planning and building unit of my Department is currently preparing a PE hall template. This template will standardise the construction of PE halls at second level schools and will reduce the architectural planning processes considerably. The template is being piloted initially in four schools of which Loreto secondary school is one. It is expected that the template will be available in the first half of 2001. Accordingly, this project is expected to be on site in the summer of 2001.

The need to ensure competitive tendering requires that the cost plan for the hall be treated as confidential.
