Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Air Accident Investigation.

Jack Wall

Question:

116 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her Department has concluded its investigation into a plane crash (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29737/00]

I understand that the Deputy's question refers to an accident which occurred on the N78, near Kilrush Airfield on 6 April 1997.

This accident was investigated by the air accident investigation unit of my Department. The report of this investigation was published on the air accident investigation unit's web site: www.irlgov.it/tec/aaiu in May 2000 and was also published in the Air Accident Investigation Unit Series 1/2000 Bulletin of Accident Reports.

The accident involved a UK registered Cessna 172, which was visiting Kilrush Airfield. While aborting a landing, the aircraft struck the airfield's boundary hedge, bounced into the next field and crashed through the next hedge, coming to rest on the N78 Kilcullen-Athy road. Neither of the two occupants, both UK citizens, was injured, but the aircraft was substantially damaged. The report did not sustain any safety recommendations.
