Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

242 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of surgical procedures carried out in each of our public hospitals; and the number that were public and private in each speciality for the years 1990 to 2000 inclusive. [29589/00]

Annual data for the hospital in-patient enquiry system are not yet available for the current year. Prior to 1995, HIPE coverage was incomplete and information on surgical procedures is therefore not available.

For the years 1995 to 1998, inclusive, tables on surgical procedures by hospital and specialty, that is, Major Diagnostic Category are being compiled at present and will be forwarded to the Deputy in the next few days. It should be noted that the HIPE system did not include information on the public-private status of patients until 1999.

With respect to 1999, the requested information has recently been supplied to the Deputy in response to a parliamentary question tabled on 7 November 2000 (Ref. No. 23741/00).
