258 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the amount of moneys recouped by his Department on the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers in each of the years 1997, 1998, 1999 and to date in 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29204/00]

259 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the likely recoupment to his Department in respect of asylum seekers that are currently placed in emergency accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29205/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 258 and 259 together.

Payments made by local authorities in respect of accommodation provided for asylum seekers by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform's directorate for asylum support services are recouped by my Department. The amounts in respect of 1997, 1998, 1999 and the estimated outturn for 2000 are set out in the following table:
