In line with the arrangements set out in the Local Government Act, 1998 all income from motor vehicle tax is paid into the local government fund and apart from administrative expenses, no motor tax income is retained at local level. In addition to motor tax, income from driver licence duties and certain miscellaneous fees and duties together with a contribution from the Exchequer are paid into the fund. The fund is distributed to local authorities as non-national road grants and general purpose grants. In 2000 Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council was allocated £8.15 million in respect of non-national roads and £21,369,728 as general purpose grants.
