Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Housing Authorities.

Billy Timmins

Question:

17 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total number of housing authorities here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29358/00]

The definition of housing authority is set out in section 23 of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1992. There are 88 main housing authorities comprised of 29 county councils, five county borough corporations, five borough corporations and 49 urban district councils.

There are 26 town commissioners who are also housing authorities but carry out a limited range of functions. The majority of housing functions within towns having commissioners are carried out by the council of the county in which such towns are situated.
