Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

73 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of tests carried out to date since the commencement of operations by the national car testing service in January 2000; the number of cars which passed the test; the number subsequently presented for re-test which passed; the cost of such tests and retests; the total income to date from such test and re-test fees; the amounts claimed by the Department to date; the use to which such moneys have been put; if moneys will be made available to local authorities to assist in the disposal of end of life vehicles which fail the test; and if, in view of the complaints which have been received to date regarding car tests, he will take steps to set up an independent procedure for the hearing of appeals against the results of such tests bearing in mind that in such circumstances an appeal to the courts is not a realistic proposition. [29299/00]

Statistics on pass/fail rates are available on the NCTS website at www.ncts.ie. These show that for the period 4 January 2000 to 30 November 2000 a total of 290,430 full tests had been carried out and that 136,502 vehicles or 47% of these presenting, passed the test. During the same period 128,721 vehicles, or 87% of those presenting, passed the re-test. The fee for a full test is £35.00 and £19.80 for a re-test.

On the questions of income to my Department from the operation of the national car test, and of redress in relation to the results of tests, I refer to the reply to Question No. 326 of 28 November 2000 and to Question No. 292 of 21 November 2000 respectively.
