Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - Learning Support Resources.

Michael Ring

Question:

226 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will increase the learning support resources available to a cluster of schools (details supplied) in County Mayo. [29928/00]

In September 1999 the learning support teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were advised that they could seek learning support where they could demonstrate a need for such a service.

A further 15 learning support posts were sanctioned in the current school year to improve the learning support service in schools with very high enrolments.

The schools referred to by the Deputy have a remedial teacher post.

I assure the Deputy that the needs of the pupils in the school in question will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing learning support services.
