Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Control of Farm Pollution Scheme.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

97 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will introduce regulations to control the movement of slurry. [30334/00]

I am not aware of any new scientific data suggesting that environmental contamination through slurry is a factor in the spread of either BSE in cattle or of CJD in humans. I am currently seeking clarification in regard to the remarks recently attributed to Commissioner Fischler in relation to this matter. I do not intend to introduce any new regulations on the movement of slurry on the basis of these reported remarks.

I can, however, assure the Deputy that if any new scientific evidence emerges I will take appropriate action at that time.
