Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Austin Deasy

Question:

205 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he is seeking further funds from the European Union to assist in protecting fishing stocks in Irish waters against the onslaught on these stocks from fishing fleets of other member countries, particularly Spain. [1911/01]

The EU Fisheries Council approved last December a new three year Union funding package towards the costs of implementing fisheries control and surveillance by member states. The new funding package puts particular emphasis on new technology, and data systems training and equipment modernisation. My Department is drawing up expenditure proposals under the programme, in consultation with the Department of Defence, the Naval Service and the Air Corps, for submission to the Commission.
