Preparatory work on the Luas line from Tallaght to the city centre commenced in September 1999 and is now well advanced. This work, which includes utility diversion work and necessary roadworks, will be completed shortly on the section from Tallaght to Red Cow. Work has recently begun on the diversion of the main Cork-Dublin gas pipeline from Suir Road bridge to facilitate the line on Davitt Road. Work on the diversion of water mains and telecom cables in Steevens' Lane, near Heuston Station, is also under way.
The construction of the depot for the line at Red Cow began in October 2000 and is on schedule for completion in July 2001. Negotiations with the two shortlisted bidders for the main construction contract, involving the track laying and the installation of mechanical and electrical systems, are at an advanced stage. This contract will be awarded next month and the track laying will commence shortly afterwards. Construction on this line is due to be completed in January 2003, in accordance with the timetable set down by the Government in May 1998.
