Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Levy.

Pat Carey

Question:

465 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Finance if the 2% health levy, which heretofore was not charged to any person whose income was less than £280, will now have to be paid on this income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1026/01]

The low income threshold for the health contribution, below which the levy is not payable, is currently £14,560 per annum or £280 per week. The figure of £280 per week is set out in the Health Contributions Act, 1979, as amended by the Social Welfare Act, 2000, and will continue at this rate for the remainder of 2001.

Question:

466 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Finance if medical card holders, aged 70 years and over who will receive medical cards irrespective of income, will be expected to pay the 2% health levy. [1028/01]

I announced in the budget that all those aged 70 years and over will be entitled to a medical card. Under the current rules, medical card holders are not liable for the health levy contribution and there are no plans to change this position.
