Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Health Strategy.

Bernard Allen

Question:

599 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received a new draft National Health Strategy compiled by the Health Research Board; and the steps he proposes to take to implement that report. [1379/01]

A draft National Strategy for Health Research prepared by the Health Research Board has been received by my Department. The strategy outlines the changes proposed over the next five years to address the requirements for health research. As it is currently being considered by my Department it would not be appropriate at this stage to set out steps which will be taken to implement the strategy. However, I do intend to publish, as soon as possible, a report on a strategy for research within the health system.

It is worth noting the 55% increase in my Department's contribution to the revenue budget of the Health Research Board in 2001. This will bring the board's budget to £10.571 million, which is an increase of 275% since 1997.
