Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Institutional Abuse.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

692 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide financial support for the committees of the Alliance for Healing from Institutional Abuse, covering counties Kerry, Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick, similar to the groups in Dublin and Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2054/01]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government made a total of £4 million available in May 1999 – on a full year basis – to allow for the establishment of a counselling service for those who were abused while in care and £200,000 of this was set aside for central developments, including the funding of support groups. In July of last year a payment of £11,000 was made to the Association for Healing of Institutional Abuse. Any future application for funding from that organisation will be examined in conjunction with all applications from survivors groups.
