Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youth Diversion Projects.

Tony Gregory

Question:

991 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress that has been made to establish a youth diversion project in the Cabra area of Dublin 7. [30525/00]

I announced the establishment of a Garda youth diversion project in Cabra on 27 October 2000, as part of an ongoing £16 million expansion in the number of such projects under the National Development Plan 2000-2006.

To date, my Department has issued funding of £25,000 to commence operation, and a management advisory committee, comprising representatives of the Garda Sochána, probation and welfare service, City of Dublin youth services board and the community, has been appointed. The full-time post of project co-ordinator has been advertised in the newspapers and, once appointed, she or he will begin the process of developing diversionary activities for appropriate young persons in the project's catchment area.
