Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Michael Ring

Question:

1195 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be assessed; and when Department officials will meet the person. [1729/01]

The senior psychologist in the National Educational Psychological Service – NEPS – with responsibility for County Mayo carried out an investigation of the needs of the named student at the beginning of the current school year. He found that a full psychological assessment had been carried out by a clinical psychologist on 10 January 2000. As the student's mother had provided a copy of the psychological report, the NEPS psychologist did not feel it was necessary to carry out a further assessment.

However, the NEPS psychologist has monitored the student's progress through discussions with his parents and with the school authorities on a number of occasions. The student has been granted an exemption from the study of Irish and has received additional literacy classes in school. More recently, in response to an application for additional resources in respect of a number of students in the school, the NEPS psychologist has recommended, with the agreement of the senior inspector, that the student shares an extra literacy class per week with another first year pupil.
