I am aware of recent press reports regarding alleged mistreatment of immigrant workers. The protections of Irish labour law apply to immigrant workers in exactly the same manner as to native Irish workers. The labour inspectorate of my Department has an ongoing responsibility for monitoring the employment conditions of various categories of vulnerable workers, including immigrant workers. Any instances of apparent abuse of foreign workers should be brought to the attention of the inspectorate. These complaints will be investigated and where there is evidence that immigrant workers are being denied any entitlements under the various employee protection Acts, such action, including prosecution, as is necessary will be taken to ensure the employers concerned comply with the law.
