Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dumping at Sea.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

22 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the threat to the marine environment from illegal dumping as highlighted in the recent report from Coastwatch Europe; the steps which are being taken to tackle the problem and to identify and prosecute those responsible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3341/01]

I understand that the report in question has yet to be published. I am also advised that the dumping which is giving most cause for concern is from land-based sources. This is a matter in the first instance for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.

However, I am concerned about any threat to the marine environment. I look forward to having the report examined from my Department's perspective and to taking any necessary measures which fall within my responsibilities.
