Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - EU Fisheries Agenda.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

38 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the matters discussed at his meeting in Dublin on 15 January 2001 with the Swedish Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries; his understanding of the priorities of the Swedish Presidency for the fisheries sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3349/01]

Minister Winberg and I had very useful and comprehensive discussions in Dublin on 15 January. Our discussions covered all the key issues on the EU fisheries agenda, including the CFP review, the European Commission's forthcoming Green Paper, EU fleet capacity management and stock recovery programmes for cod and hake. I underlined the need for greater protection of fish stocks generally through radical new technical conservation measures and enhanced control and enforcement and looked for the support of the Presidency in progressing these as priority concerns.

The Swedish Presidency is giving key priority to the integration of environmental considerations into fisheries policy which will be discussed at the Council of Ministers next month with a view to agreeing conclusions on future directions.
