Vol. 530 No. 3

Written Answers. - Vaccination Programme.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

189 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 533 of 30 January 2001, he will outline the proposals he has to allow nurses administer the influenza and pneumococcal vaccines; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3985/01]

The question of administering the influenza and pneumococcal vaccines is matter for the individual general practitioner concerned. In line with guidelines laid down by An Bord Altranais, nurses may administer medical preparations, including vaccines, only in accordance with the direction of a registered medical practitioner given in writing, usually in the form of a prescription, once they are satisfied that they are competent to do so.
