Vol. 530 No. 3

Written Answers. - E-mail Security.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

64 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has satisfied herself that her Department's e-mail security system is adequate to deter all forms of hacking; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3535/01]

I am completely satisfied that my Department has implemented up-to-date security measures to secure the integrity of the e-mail system. This statement must be viewed against the background whereby it is never possible for any organisation to be complacent about e-mail and network security. Having the most up-to-date security mechanisms in place for e-mail and network security do not ensure a 100% guarantee that this security cannot be breached.

By its nature, hacking is an activity engaged in by persons who are very computer literate and enjoy the challenge of outmanoeuvring the technological advances in security systems. There have been highly publicised cases where hackers have circumvented the most sophisticated security mechanisms. Organisations must at all times be vigilant in this regard and my Department is conscious of this and regularly reviews and updates the security systems in place.
