Vol. 530 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Seamus Healy

Question:

73 Mr. Healy asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding the transfer of the Army headquarters training branch and the Defence Forces training branch to Kickham Barracks, Clonmel, County Tipperary; the arrangements being made for the transfer; the timescale for the transfer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3870/01]

As I have previously announced it has been decided, in the context of the White Paper on Defence, to decentralise the Directorate of Reserve Forces and the Directorate of Training from Defence Forces Headquarters, Dublin to Kickham Barracks, Clonmel, County Tipperary. Before these transfers can take place, it will be necessary to ensure that suitable accommodation is provided in Clonmel.

I have now made moneys available for the necessary works, and consultants were appointed recently to undertake the design of the refurbishment of the accommodation block. It is intended to commence construction in September 2001 with a target date for completion of March 2002.

Question No. 74 answered with Question No. 67.
