189 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Limerick has had her personal allowances considerably reduced for the period April 2000 to April 2001 compared with the corresponding period in 1999-2000; and his views on the fairness of increasing the amount due by more than £1,200; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The inspector of taxes is satisfied the taxpayer has received all the tax free allowances to which she is entitled for the years in question, that is, the personal allowances, PAYE allowance and the age allowance.

The increase of more than £1,200 referred to by the Deputy was due to an increase in the taxpayer's tax liability from £2,541.22 in 1998-99 to £3,795.14 in 1999-2000. This increased liability reflects a substantial increase in the taxpayer's income from deposit interest, that is, from £1,414 in 1998-99 to £4,002 in 1999-2000.
