Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - Emergency Accommodation.

Question:

237 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children the standards which apply to hostels and bed and breakfast accommodation used for emergency accommodation; if he has any concerns on health grounds regarding the quality of this accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4698/01]

The responsibility for ensuring that standards are maintained with regard to hostels and bed and breakfast accommodation used for emergency accommodation lies with the local authorities. The only responsibility regarding such accommodation which rests with the health boards relates to environmental health issues. In this regard, I understand that the environmental health officers carry out inspections on a regular basis.
