Vol. 530 No. 6

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

312 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if information is available in regard to the success of the Waste Management Packaging Regulations, 1997, in so far as it applies to businesses which do not participate in approved waste recovery schemes; if the requirement to store segregated waste for a period of four weeks actually results in any recycling or if a portion of such waste eventually goes to landfill; and, if so, if his attention has been drawn as to the proportion which goes to landfill. [4846/01]

Enforcement of the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations, 1997, and the Waste Management (Packaging)(Amendment) Regulations, 1998, is a local authority function. The detailed information requested is not available in my Department. However, information on repackaging waste arisings, and disposal and recovery routes generally, is contained in the national waste database, 1998, published by the Environmental Protection Agency in March 2000.
