Written Answers. - Capital Projects.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

327 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the capital projects funded by his Department that commenced in the Waterford constituency in 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4885/01]

All of my Department's capital budget is for computer hardware. My Department has not funded any capital projects in the Waterford constituency which commenced in 2000. However, my Department supports locally based community groups involved in anti-poverty and social inclusion work in their communities through a range of long-term funding schemes under the community development support programmes, namely, the community development programme, the family and community services resource centre programme, the programme of core funding to locally based community and family support groups.

My Department also funds a number of once-off grant schemes which concentrate on support for local self help groups, community development, welfare rights and information work. The once-off grants schemes are scheme of grants to voluntary organisations – these grants are made for renovation or acquisition of premises, the purchase of equipment or transport, once-off publications or research or other special projects – community development education and training grants scheme – the purpose of this scheme is to fund local community and voluntary groups for funding and education initiatives, for example, programmes which strengthen and increase the skills and knowledge of management committees scheme of grants for locally based community and family support groups.

Grants are provided for programmes of self help and personal development designed to tackle poverty and disadvantage and improve family life. In addition, my Department funds the money advice and budgeting service which supports a number of centres countrywide which are involved in activities at local level aimed at tackling the problems of moneylending and overindebtedness. Details of all funding, including capital funding, made available under these various schemes-programmes have been made available to the Library each year to 1999 for the information of Members. Details of funding made available in 2000 are currently being finalised and will be made available to the Library in the coming weeks for the information of Members.
